TINTSABA CRAFT

Tintsaba Craft – Richard Freemantle

Founded in 1985 by Sheila and Richard Freemantle, Tintsaba began as a way to unite local artisans under one creative space after a fire destroyed the town’s market. During this time, Sheila connected with a group of rural women who practiced traditional Swazi basket weaving — a meeting that inspired what would become the Tintsaba collective.

From its modest beginnings with just a dozen women, the initiative has flourished into a network of more than 400 artisans across rural Eswatini. These women — mothers, farmers, caregivers, and artists — transform sisal fibre from the Agave Sisalensis plant into intricate baskets, jewelry, and home décor pieces. Each creation is meticulously handmade, combining traditional weaving techniques with contemporary design. The brand’s signature 925-silver jewelry line, featuring miniature woven designs set in silver, exemplifies this fusion of craft and innovation.

Sheila’s founding vision was rooted in empowerment — helping women achieve personal growth and financial independence through their artistry. Guided by this principle, Tintsaba has fostered a holistic working environment, offering courses and workshops in leadership, technical skills, environmental sustainability, and women’s health.

Over the years, more than 1,400 women have received training through Tintsaba’s programs. The income from their craft supports not only their livelihoods but also their families and children’s education.

Renowned internationally for the refinement of its sisal basketry and the quality of its handmade jewelry, Tintsaba has received numerous awards and continues to be recognized as a leader in sustainable craft and social enterprise.

Meaning “Mountains” in siSwati, Tintsaba celebrated its 40th anniversary in April 2025, marking four decades of creativity, community, and craftsmanship.
