EXHIBITIONS & HIGHLIGHTS
Indalo Eswatini Exhibition 2025 – Imvelo ya Mveli | The Nature of Creation
Opening 24 October 2025 at the Alliance Française de Mbabane, the Indalo Eswatini Exhibition brings home two years of international collaboration supported by the EU Delegation and the International Trade Centre. Vuna Africa will present the Imvelo ya Mveli (The Nature of Creation) collection — a series of hand-carved soapstone tiles exploring the origins of creation and the sacred connection between maker, material, and place. This exhibition reflects the ongoing dialogue between traditional craft and contemporary design in Eswatini. Hosting Indalo locally is both a homecoming and an opportunity to exchange knowledge with fellow artisans and designers, reinforcing the value of creativity as a tool for sustainability, identity, and cultural continuity.
People’s Craft Week 2025 – Threads That Bind
In October 2025, Vuna Africa participated in The People’s Craft Week in Johannesburg, a cross-border exhibition connecting artisans from Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa. Presented across the French Institute and Mama Ka Shaka & Friends, the exhibition explored shared heritage through handcrafted work under the theme Craft as Connection.
In collaboration with Nkuli Mlangeni-Berg of The Ninevites, Vuna Africa curated the Eswatini section, presenting a considered selection of works by Khulekani Msweli, Sasa-Lu, Mduduzi Mnisi, Dumsani Mnisi, Mnqobi Mnisi, Comfort Nkumane, Siyaphambili Cooperative, Tintsaba Craft, Bhekani Dlamini, and Yebo Art & Design. The presentation brought together a range of material practices, positioning Eswatini craft & design within a broader regional dialogue while maintaining a strong sense of cultural continuity. As part of the programme, Sharon Venancio also presented at the Pecha Kucha session at the Dibuka Library, sharing Vuna Africa’s approach to collaboration, material exploration, and sustainable design.
Paris Design Week 2025 – Tihlangu tekukhanya | Shields of Light
In September 2025, Vuna Africa exhibited under the Indalo Crafts Collective at Paris Design Week, within the Eswatini Pavilion supported by the International Trade Centre and the European Union. We presented the Tihlangu tekukhanya (Shields of Light) collection — a sculptural candleholder series hand-carved from ancient Swazi soapstone in collaboration with Eswatini master sculptor Mnqobi Mnisi. Inspired by ceremonial shields once laid down in surrender, each piece transforms a symbol of conflict into one of light, peace, and renewal. The show’s theme, Regeneration, explored how design can renew culture and identity. For Vuna Africa, it was an opportunity to share Eswatini’s material heritage on a global stage and engage with designers rethinking sustainability through narrative and form. The experience reinforced the power of cultural storytelling in contemporary design — and the importance of honoring both origin and intention.
3 Days of Design 2025, Copenhagen – Tihlangu tekukhanya | Shields of Light
In June 2025, at the world-renowned 3daysofdesign festival in Copenhagen, Vuna Africa exhibited under the Indalo Crafts Collective, presenting the Tihlangu tekukhanya (Shields of Light) collection; a series of sculptural candleholders hand-carved from Swazi soapstone in collaboration with master sculptor Mnqobi Mnisi. The festival’s theme, “Keep It Real,” celebrated authenticity, material truth, and the value of slow creation, principles central to Vuna Africa’s practice. Our work embodied these ideals, merging ancestral symbolism with contemporary design and honoring the tactile imperfections that reveal the maker’s hand. Participating in the show offered the chance to engage with designers globally who are re-centering craft, sustainability, and emotional connection in design — reaffirming Africa’s essential voice in this evolving dialogue.
